In light of the incentive structure of social media, the command to "be dependent on no one" takes on some additional resonance. If your income stream (or indeed your livelihood) depends on hot takes, retweets and likes, following this command becomes nearly impossible.

I do wonder some times if the pastors and other church figures whose social media footprint dramatically outpaces the size of their actual congregations are chasing monetized engagement (at least in part) as a way to supplement their income. Substack is obviously different, as we're directly paying to hear from you!
