Thank you for this. I struggle because for me, the real fear of responsibility has always been at its core a fear of responsibility to make sure one is willing to be saved, so my anxiety is always underneath everything else I plea to be told that I will be saved even if I am an unwilling to do whatever is demanded. Every tiny responsibility carries within it this implicit total risk and total responsibility.
A good reminder to act and take risks. To act wisely and make decisions is better than turning away. I’d also say by acting is how we’re formed and grow into bigger people, emotionally and spiritually.
Alan, would you say there’s any reasons why acting and embracing responsibility leads to less anxiety in the long run? I imagine it’s because inactivity can make rumination more likely and choice paralysis can be an anxiety provoking state
I think that's exactly it. Over time you habituate to responsibility. That's not to say that you won't experience any anxiety or spikes of it, but I believe in the long run you'll experience less precisely because of what you've identified: rumination. Acting can help prevent rumination and move us forward.
This was very timely for me. Thank you
