I'm not sure how we get back after the genuine rupture of 2016, if there's not a general repentance from that. And amid all the fog and confusion of American identity, the thing which seems clear to many different people, aimed at different targets, is who the internal enemy actually is. And this is true for me as well: I feel the people suggesting that we can't have a country if we have birthright citizenship are by that argument outing themselves as beyond the moral pale within which we can build a community. I can be in community with people I disagree with, but when it's people whose sine qua non demand is that other, equal humans be excluded unfairly, then I feel like I can't ever accept being in community with the excluders if their victims are still left outside.
